T-Mobile Puts Out Full List Of LTE-Advanced Markets
Major US carrier T-Mobile has posted up a full list of domestic markets where LTE-Advanced technology is available for consumer use. Furthermore, the company has differentiated markets on the list that have the basic level of LTE-Advanced coverage available, and those that have a few other technologies available that can enhance the experience. The full list of markets is nearly 1,000 strong, and about half of the markets listed have the full suite of technologies, which includes three channel carrier aggregation, 256 QAM, and 4×4 MIMO. People with the right devices in those markets can expect more than ample capacity for almost any network scenario in a given area, speeds nearing and even passing the gigabit mark, and superior building penetration, making it a challenge to find places without ample coverage.
To be exact, the only devices on T-Mobile’s network that are able to take advantage of the full suite of technologies right now are the absolute latest flagship devices, all bearing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. This includes Samsung’s Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, and Note 8, as well as the LG V30, and the Moto Z2 Force. While other devices can get some benefit, like increased speed thanks to the higher capacity in places where there would normally be congestion, only those devices will be able to reap the full benefits. Presumably, those devices will be able to function on preliminary 5G networks once they begin rolling out, though it’s quite possible and even likely that full-on 5G, which can’t begin rolling out until the 3GPP defines the final standard, will be incompatible.
The number of markets with LTE-Advanced is staggering, and is growing by the week. The number of markets with the full loadout of network options possible with T-Mobile’s current technology is quite impressive, given the sheer network backhaul required. Florida is one area where all of the covered LTE-Advanced markets have full features, even beating out T-Mobile’s home state of Washington. There are some areas that simply don’t have the new features in any markets just yet, such as Vermont. Presumably, T-Mobile will be farming out its newly won 600MHz spectrum to continue the expansion of both LTE-Advanced and the new features that can work with it.
